Ashona and Suvaksh

Suvaksh and I met at the University of Witwatersrand in 2017. I laid my gaze on the most precious smile that left me breathless at the Holi event. We never met again during that year. Over a year later Suvaksh reached out to me on social media noting that he remembered me from the event. We chatted and decided to go out on our first date.

The sweetest memory was him asking me if he could hold my hand and giving me a kiss on my cheek before we left.

That is where our 4-year long relationship began before we placed our faith in each other and leapt into marriage.

Planning our wedding began with me buying my wedding outfit from Zari Ethnics. The next task was choosing a venue. Suvaksh and I live in Johannesburg, but our wedding was to take place in Durban. Once we had settled on a wedding venue that met our budget and needs, we began putting the rest of the puzzle together. This involved group chats on WhatsApp with our parents, countless calls, trips to India fairs and venue viewing in Durban.

What’s an Indian wedding without some family drama? There were some extended family drama that tried to reckon with our strong bond of love, respect, trust and faith in each other but true to our love it only united us in a stronger bond. The family drama was definitely a blessing in disguise!

Planning also ensured a destination wedding as Suvaksh and his family are from Glencoe so a lot of packing and coordination was involved.

The special and unique occurrence was that our Hurdee venues were in the same place with his Hurdee at the hall at the bottom and mine at the hall on top, yet our gazes only met on our special day.

The most special memory from our wedding was of course seeing each other after 10 days and it was when both of our parents performed the Kanyadaan prayer together which signified that both of our families were gaining a child with so much of love to share rather than the giving away of the bride.

Our family truly united in love, laughter, good and bad times from that day onwards.

My advice to beautiful couples about to embark on this beautiful journey would be to plan your big day as a family. I know this is frowned upon as it is your wedding, but the excitement, bonding and happiness truly gets doubled. So, get those WhatsApp family groups going!
