Sumeshnee and Tevin

Tevin and I have literally known each other our whole lives!

We were in the same class in grade 1 and became the best of friends in grade 11. We lost contact with each other after our matric year, having odd encounters occasionally in the years that followed. In 2017, I decided to reactivate my Facebook account. A week or 2 later received a direct message from Tevin just saying “Hi”.

To his surprise he couldn’t believe I was single and to my surprise I couldn’t believe he wanted to reconnect with me.

We chatted for a while and then decided to meet. It was like we never lost contact with each other. In September 2017, we started dating and we’ve been inseparable ever since.

In November 2020, during our short trip to Sun City Tevin proposed to me. Two years later, we decided to get married.

When it came to planning our wedding, for the oddest reason I was not stressed. I think much of it had to do with the fact that the wedding was post the Covid-19 pandemic. So much had happened during the pandemic that I felt numb to what was happening around me.

Tevin and I both had this “If it happens this way, so be it” kind of attitude.

We had a conversation with our parents and were straightforward about what and how we wanted our wedding to be.

.

We put a full stop to anything which was not aligned to how we envisioned our big day there and there. We blocked all negative energy from people telling us how to do things and just listened to what the priest told us to.

Our wedding weekend was a bit of a disaster weekend. Tevin and I got married the weekend that there were freak storms and cold fronts happening in November in Johannesburg.

Believe it or not,the Friday of our Nelengu, lightning struck the power station causing it to catch alight in Lenasia South – where our pre-wedding events were being held! Our entire wedding weekend was spent in darkness.

We had no power on our Nelengu and we spent Saturday planning and prepping for our wedding with no electricity whatsoever. We had no power either on the Sunday which was our wedding day. The power was only fully restored on Monday- after our wedding. This was when I walked out of my parent’s house with my lamp. It was the freakiest thing ever.

My husband and I tell each other throughout the times that we weren’t together and when we did date other people, that ‘WE’ were the people we’d compare others to.

.

I’d tell him that he was my,”What if?” And he’d tell me that ,” If it wasn’t going to be me, it wouldn’t be anyone.”

When we first saw each other on our wedding day. That exact moment when we first saw each other as bride and groom felt like time stood still.

I was standing in front of my bestfriend who was now becoming my husband. It felt surreal, like if things could go wrong it really didn’t matter to us because it was a moment that we simply waited for our entire lives.

Brides and grooms to be, it is your wedding day. The day should be spent with close family and friends and no one else.
